Document Accessibility: Document Titles
Always add your document title to Document Properties. Entering your title in Document Properties helps prevent confusion for people who rely on assistive technology like screen readers. The title that you add to Document Properties is the first thing a screen-reader user will hear. It quickly lets them know which document they are viewing. It should be the same as the visible title on the page.
Microsoft 365 Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel have a similar process for entering a title in Document Properties:
- Click on the File tab in the main menu to reach the Home screen.
- Click the Info tab.
- Next, enter your title. To add a title, you can either
- Click directly into the “Title” field under Properties on the Info tab, or
- Click on Properties to open the Advanced Properties pane
- Under the Summary tab, enter the title in the Title field
- Click OK to save the changes.
In Microsoft Word, you can also reach the Info tab by clicking the View tab in the main menu. Next, choose the Properties tab. This will take you to the Info tab. From there, follow the third step above.
Important for Excel: If you are creating multiple sheet tabs within a single Excel document, make sure you give each tab a unique title. You can title these tabs by clicking into them and changing the generic text inside to a descriptive title. You can also right click on the tabs and select Rename.
Adobe PDFs
To add your title to Document Properties in an Adobe PDF document:
- Press Control D on your keyboard to open the Document Properties window
- You can also open this window by clicking on File and then Properties
- A Document Properties window with different tabs will pop up
- Choose the Description tab
- Enter your title in the Title field
- Click OK to save the changes
Google Docs
Currently, there is no way to directly add an accessible title to a Google Docs document. Follow the steps in the Editorial team’s quick guide to transfer text into a Microsoft Word template when the content is ready for the editorial process.
